Best Spray Wax for Black Cars (My Top 5)

Spray waxes seem too good to be true.  Just mist on and wipe off and your black car is shining and protected.  Can it really be that simple? And which offers the best value?

Hybrid Ceramic Wax

My favorite spray wax is Meguiars Hybrid Ceramic Wax.  It’s perfect for dark colored cars because it leaves no residue or streaks.  You can even spray it on glass and plastic trim. And it offers an unbelievable shine and incredible water beading for months.

One of the great things about Meguiars Hybrid Ceramic Wax is that it can be applied to a wet car.  Just spray it all over after washing and rinse off before drying your car as normal.

There is no need to clay your car before applying a spray wax.  The reason for claying is to remove bonded tar and iron and other contaminants.  These need to be removed before polishing and waxing with a paste wax because you need to work these products in to the paint with a little pressure.  This pressure could cause tar and bits of dirt to become loose and scratch your paint.

Of course, if you do decide to clay your car before application of a spray wax, you will have even better results because the product will bond even better.

But with many spray waxes, you don’t need to use any pressure because the liquid is so thin.  You just lightly buff them off with a microfibre towel if needed. And, as is the case with the Meguiars product, you don’t even need to do that.

A spray wax is a quick and effective way to give your car a fast shine and layer of protection after a wash.  For the best shine your should use a liquid or paste wax once or twice a year and use one of these spray waxes to keep it topped up.

Don’t confuse a spray wax with a spray detailer.  A spray wax must be applied to a just washed car.  For some spray waxes, the car should be dry first so read the instructions of whichever product you buy.

A purpose of a spray detailer is to help remove light dirt and dust.  Detailer contains ingredients that will encapsulate the dust and protect your car’s shine.  It will also add some protection and shine but not as much as a spray wax.

Why does my car need to be washed before applying a spray wax?

Any dirt and dust on your car will get rubbed in to the paint and cause scratching to the outer clear coat layer.  The fine scratches may not be noticeable right away. But over time this is what causes cars to lose their shine.  These scratches become the infamous swirl marks that all car lovers hate.

Get yourself some decent quality microfiber towels and a large drying towel.

Advantages of spray wax

  • Easy to apply.
  • Quick to apply.
  • Can be applied all over car including paint, plastic, lights and glass.
  • Adds more shine to any existing wax
  • Adds hydrophobic properties (repels water).
  • Makes car easier to wash next time because dirt doesn’t stick as well.
  • Makes it easier to remove dust with detailer spray between washes.
  • Needs very little elbow grease.
  • No need to clay your car first.
  • Some can be applied in direct sunlight.

Disadvantages of spray wax

  • Can be tricky to apply on a windy day.
  • Might not offer as much shine as a proper wax like one of these.

1. Meguiars Hybrid Ceramic Wax Review

Best Spray Wax for Black Cars (My Top 5) 3

This new product from Megs really has it all.  It contains the latest ceramic technology called silicon dioxide (SIo2) which bonds to your paint.  This ceramic product doesn’t offer as much protection as a full ceramic coating, but it’s still very effective and is a million times easier to apply.

Water beads relentlessly which makes your car easier to dry after a wash.  If you have a pressure washer you will find that the vast majority of dirt can be blasted off in the pre wash.

Get yourself a nice big microfiber drying towel to make the drying job quicker and easier.  Drying your car the wrong way will cause the shine to fade very quickly which is bad news for black cars. For more drying tips read my post on the subject.

2. Meguiars Ultimate Quik Wax Review

Best Spray Wax for Black Cars (My Top 5) 4

This has been my main spray wax for years and I only only recently replaced it with Hybrid Ceramic above.  After most washes I would give the whole car a very quick once over with Ultimate Quik Wax. You can also apply Quik Wax on your car while its still wet. This will save you even more time when washing.

Discovering this product was a revelation to me.  The main advantage was that it was much easier to wash my car the following week.  Even after a month my car would still be protected.

Another advantage was that I felt safer using a quick detailer to touch up my car because of the layer of protection underneath the dirt. Bird poop too could be easily wiped away using a quick detailer spray.

How to apply Megs Ultimate Quik Wax

  1. Fully wash the car using thetwo bucket method.
  2. Spray Quik Wax on to your car, windows too.
  3. Spray some on my microfiber towel.
  4. Spread the product out over the wet panel.
  5. Dry the car with another clean microfiber towel.
  6. Use multiple microfiber towels to ensure car is fully dried.
  7. Alternatively, dry the car fully before applying Quik Wax. This can result in better shine.

3. Turtle Wax ICE Spray Wax Review

Best Spray Wax for Black Cars (My Top 5) 5

Not that the Meguiars products on this list are that expensive, but this one wins the prize for best value for money.  Now don’t be fooled by the cheap price. ICE Spray Wax can hold it’s own against the best.  Don’t believe me? Click here to read some of the hundreds of 5 star reviews on Amazon.

It delivers a great shine.  And it can last for a number of weeks, so if you wash your car regularly it’s perfect.  You can put it on plastic and rubber too. Many liquid or paste waxes will stain plastic.

Turtle wax suggest it can even be used as a glass cleaner.  It’s really a superb all round car care product that saves you time and money.

It can be applied in direct sunlight which is another bonus.  You apply this with a microfibre towel. The kit on Amazon comes with a foam applicator pad if you want to use it.  But I think the towel is all you need.

If you like to use a full wax one a twice a year, you can use this after each wash to add protection to that existing wax and build on the gloss.

4. CarGuys Hybrid Wax Sealant Review

Best Spray Wax for Black Cars (My Top 5) 6

The carguys product is one of the few products that actually contain some actual carnauba wax.  Most spray waxes are entirely synthetic.

This thing has thousands of positive reviews on Amazon so read them yourself and see if this product is right for you.

It’s safe to use on all surfaces on your car including chrome, aluminium, glass, rubber and plastic.

No residue is left behind which is why I recommend it for black and dark colored vehicles.

Easy to apply, you can get around your car in 15 minutes or less.

It offers UV protection too.  So you paint and plastic will be be protected for at least 3 months and up to 6 months depending on how you wash it.

Some users on Amazon have complained that it becomes sticky and is hard to buff off.  To prevent this out might be best to apply in the shade and when the paint is cool to the touch.

5. Griots Garage Spray On Wax Review

Best Spray Wax for Black Cars (My Top 5) 7

This much loved spray wax delivers a quick boost to your existing wax or sealant.

Use it directly after each wash. You can apply it on wet or dry paint. Just spray on and wipe off.

Griots say that you can use this to get the bits of dirt you missed during your wash. Did you know that you should never try to scrub the dirt you missed with a towel as it will scratch your paint? You should always use some lubrication and Griots garage spray on wax can be used for this.

I would normally use a large plush microfiber towel to dry my car. But if I’m using this product I would probably pat dry my car with the large towel. And then spray on the wax and wipe off with multiple smaller microfiber towels.

So this product will act as a drying aid spray. It will protect your car from swirls and scratches as you dry it.  This is very useful because many people scratch their car during the drying phase without realizing it.

Many users on Amazon claim that this offers as much shine as you get from a full wax. This product should only be used on a just washed car. It’s not meant to be used as a detailer spray.

Conclusion

Its hard to pick the best spray wax for black cars.  But all of the ones I have mentioned above are great because they don’t cause streaking and protect your car against scratching.

All black car owners should use one every time you wash.

Happy detailing.
